Bob and His Son Joe

From about age 61 until almost age 70, Bob lived in a remote area on the island of Maui in Hawaii. He had moved there after mandatory retirement from the airlines at age 60. (All airlines retire all pilots at age 60; they are now considering changing that ruling, or perhaps it has already changed.)

Bob and some of his friends established a spiritual retreat center on Maui, where they held retreats for a number of years. One of the people who attended later helped convince Bob to move to Song of the Morning Yoga Retreat Center in Northern Michigan in the fall of 1991.

J. Oliver Black and Bob

The retreat center's founder/president/spiritual director and a close friend of Bob's, J. Oliver Black, had died in 1989, leaving the center without a director. Initially Bob said, "No," preferring to remain in Hawaii's warm climate. But then he relented and made the move. When asked why he left Hawaii for Michigan, he said, "I wanted to be of service to others."

Bob, Joe and Feline Friend

Bob's son Joe visited Bob on occasion in Hawaii. This photo shows part of Bob's octagon-shaped house.
